A passive system will work by using the suns light, it then will work by heating the water within your solar panel heating system and hey presto there you have it, hot water without the bills.

The way an active solar system works to produce energy is that it uses the suns energy rather than the light and it will need an extra source of power so that the panels can move so that they can get the most energy that the sun has to offer. This will mean that you benefit from the sun no matter the position.
