Energy is a source of power that makes the world go round. Businesses, residences, automobiles, everything uses energy in some form or another. In the past, fossil fuels provided enough energy for people’s needs. However, as that resource is slowly depleted, people are turning to the energy of the sun and the solar panels that provide it, as an option.

Fossil fuels are made up of hydro-carbon rich resources such as organic materials buried beneath the earth. These organic materials are burned and used to generate steam, which turns a turbine engine. These engines create the world’s energy resources. Unfortunately, fossil fuel as an energy source is messy and creates pollution.

Solar panels provide clean and pollution free energy by capturing the light of the sun and turning it into electricity. Because the sun has a very long lifespan, measured in thousands and thousands of years, this is considered a renewable energy source. Using a solar panel for electricity is a good option.

Each individual solar panel is made up of solar cells. These are also called photovoltaic cells. In a general sense of the process, photovoltaic cells collect the sun’s energy, cleanly and efficiently, and turn it into useable electricity as a power source.

The sun itself is made up of streaming radiation that constantly pours towards the earth in the form of light energy. Thermonuclear explosions result within the sun from the fusing of helium atoms and hydrogen atoms. The energy they give off that streams towards the earth is the energy that solar panels gather up, storing it in batteries for future use. A photovoltaic cell or solar cell on a solar panel placed at the equator of the earth that is one fifth of a meter in size can collect two amps of two volt energy. Solar panels placed in space collect far more energy.

Some solar panels are made from crystalline silicon, while others are made using amorphous silicon technology. The amorphous style of solar paneling is thinner and more efficient than the crystalline kind. Some high efficiency solar cells are constructed using gallium arsenide. However, the expensive process of making them, called molecular beam epitaxy, is not ideal for every day use cells.

Besides using silicon, it’s also possible to make solar panels with plastic. With this sort of technology, it would be possible to have solar cells layered over the screen of, say, a laptop computer. This would provide a constant source of power where it is needed. However, plastic solar cells aren’t prepared yet to gather up more than eleven percent of energy that their silicon counterparts gather.

The world’s trend in energy is slowly changing. People are seeking out new forms of creating energy, especially from renewable sources. Because so much of what humanity relies on is derived or a part of the energy cycle, finding energy that is clean and efficient is very important. Enough light strikes the earth every day to provide for the world’s energy needs for a year. Solar panels are a way of capturing this energy, cleanly, without a harsh impact on the environment.
