Wood pellets have been growing in popularity greatly in Europe since the beginning of the 21st century. Wood Pellets in Sweden are now one of the leading fuels. Wood pellets demand is increasing globally, and the growth is set to continue into the future.
There are both softwood and hardwood wood pellets sold on the market. The sources of this wood could be sawdust from timber processing, or perhaps wood collected from woodland management, or from events such as the pine beetle which created a lot of wood waste.
A processed or contaminated wood cannot be used for wood pellets, also wood which main contain nails or stones is also not appropriate. This would create some serious issues for the equipment, particularly the pellet mill, which is one of the most expensive pieces of equipment.
Before the wood is ready for the pellet mill, it must first be reduced in size whether the wood is in log, chip or even sawdust form. The key to making good wood pellets is consistency of the raw material. Therefore the wood needs to be reduced to a uniform size.
One thing you do not want is a raw material with a high percentage of moisture, firstly because it creates a poor fuel and secondly it cannot actually be compressed into pellet form. Therefore the wood must be dried before it can be used in the wood pellet mill.
After drying and going through the hammer mill to create a uniform particle size, the wood is then ready for the wood pellet mill. The wood pellet mills is comprised of a set of rollers which compress the wood through a die template with holes. As the wood is forced through the die, this generates immense heat and pressure which effectively melts the wood, which can then be reformed into wood pellets. The wood pellets leave very hot, and must cool.
